Hypnosis and Misconceptions Explained

Alice's Maldon Hypnotherapy Clinic is within easy reach of Chelmsford, Colchester, Burnham on Crouch, Witham, Kelvedon, and surrounds. More about Hypnosis...

Hypnosis from the Greek word Hypnos - or sleep - is really a misnomer as during hypnosis you are not in any way asleep (or in a trance), just naturally mentally and physically relaxed at the same time as being mentally focused. In fact the only real difference between sleep and hypnosis is that in hypnosis your conscious attention is amplified whereas in sleep it's quite the opposite, it's dampened.

In fact there is no such thing as a special hypnotised feeling. Hypnosis is a very ordinary and pleasant state where there is just a profound sense of relaxation along with a focus of ones concentration that is induced by suggestion. What makes it hypnotherapy as opposed to just hypnosis is suggestion (aka Clinical Hypnosis) or the process of Pure Hypnoanalysis.

hypnotist show

There is no mind control, brainwashing or manipulation as is a common misconception gleaned from stage hypnotist shows and television portrayals of hypnosis. The truth of the matter is hypnosis is quite the opposite. It's a heightened sense of awareness on all levels of senses, concentration and creativity, that when guided correctly opens up an immensely powerful force for change for the better good of the individual. For example while in this relaxed state the mind finds it easier to accept beneficial suggestions e.g. "You are now a non-smoker". Oh and NO hypnotist can make you do anything you don't WANT to do, it's an entirely permissive process.

Another myth to be dispelled is that some people cannot be hypnotised. Anyone in a reasonably sober state of mind can reach the relaxed state of hypnosis. In fact we all do so naturally several times a day without the help of a hypnotherapist! We've all experienced that blurry stage between sleep and awake, or been engrossed watching a gripping movie, zoned out long distance driving, or been lost in a hobby or work to the point where you lose track of time. These are all "states of hypnosis", just without the suggestion part which is where I come in!

You are quite free to converse, move around and so on in hypnosis and you will remember (probably more clearly than normal) what's said in the session.

American Health Magazine reported the following findings from a study.

• Psychoanalysis: 38% recovery after 600 sessions

• Behavior Therapy: 72% recovery after 22 sessions

• Hypnotherapy: 93% recovery after 6 sessions
